By the way, there's a great little corner grocery store in Indio where you can buy cheap FRESH dates (the fruit variety!!). Don't ask me the address but perhaps your friends there will know of it. It is run by a young Mexican couple. I also bought great raisins there. My Aunt and Uncle took us there while we were visiting them in Palm Desert. By the way, Linda, there is a nice quilt shop called “Monica's” in Palm Desert. It was walking distance from my Aunt's place so I spent a fair amount of time and money there. We are sure enjoying reading about your trip.

flying back from tenerife on sunday i had a few hours layover at the madrid airport. i figured, what the hell, hopped on three subways to the center of the city, plaza del sol. there, i continued on foot to an unassuming raciones and tapas cafeteria for a most delicious plate of paella. it was well worth the side journey! paella is both stick to the ribs delicious and a subtly spiced delicacy.
